Why holiday or weekend break around Chagford?
For its beauty and close proximity to some of Dartmoor's best attractions. This ancient stannary town is a walk away from the National Trust's Castle Drogo. A little further on, we can't recommend the Teign Gorge Circular Walk (Medium) highly enough.

We'd also suggest you trudge up Meldon Hill for the view. To the north is Exmoor National Park and to the south east Haytor Rocks. You're likely to see Dartmoor Ponies and to the west the summits of Yes Tor and High Willhays.

To the north of the Park and just off the A30 Devon-Cornwall trunk road, Chagford's one of Dartmoor's most popular destinations. About half an hour from Exeter train station, it's easily accessible.

Well-heeled (the description 'Chelsea-on-the-Moor' is pushing it however) there are plenty of places in which to stay, eat and drink. Try its two famous, labyrinthine hardware stores, too.

Five recommended things to do
Visit the National Trust's Castle Drogo. The last castle to be built in England, it's a fascinating place with top views of north Dartmoor and the Teign Gorge.

Walk the Teign Gorge to Fingle Bridge and its pub. This is one of Dartmoor's finest walks and will take about three hours from Chagford.

Climb Meldon Hill. Chagford's in the shadow of Meldon Hill and there's a steep path to its summit. The views are extraordinary and you're likely to see Dartmoor Ponies.

Visit Fernworthy Reservoir and walk its shores.

Explore Chagford Common around Kestor Rock. You'll find Shovel Down Stone Rows and Scorhill Stone Circle.

Local towns and villages
Try the pretty village of Drewsteignton just off the Two Moors Way. To the south east is Moretonhampstead, to the north west Belstone and Okehampton.
